Welcome to the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering!

From the highways and bridges you drive over, to the buildings you live and work in, to the systems that provide you access to clean water, civil and environmental engineers address the core needs of society. We improve quality of life, protect people from hazards and disasters, and solve global challenges.

Civil and environmental engineers also have an important role in shaping our future. Urgent crises such as climate change, sustainable urban development and access to clean water and air, require innovative thinking and collaboration with other disciplines. Our students and faculty are at the center of this endeavor.

In the Astani Department, we help inform better decision-making regarding our natural and built environments by:

  • Engineering for Disaster Resilience
  • Engineering for Extreme Habitats
  • Engineering for Urban Livability
  • Engineering for Environmental Stewardship
  • Engineering for Transport Service Systems

Our focus is on the present and the future: educating future engineers, innovators and leaders who drive change through human-centered approaches. Established in 1906 as one of the first engineering departments at USC, our department is now home to world-class educators and globally recognized researchers. We empower our students to be highly skilled change-makers.

The world is rapidly changing, but our mission remains the same: to prepare the engineers of tomorrow today and to build a more sustainable world for all humanity.
