Eric C. Shen

Biography

Professor Eric C. Shen, P.E., PTP, is an experienced professional with over 30 years in infrastructure and transportation, focusing on intermodal design, planning, delivery, and emergency operations. As founder and CEO of Shen and Associates, LLC, based in Southern California, he advises public and private clients on multimodal planning, capital projects, program management, and interagency coordination.

In public service, Professor Shen has held leadership roles such as Chief Engineer/Director of Capital Projects for the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG), the Mid-Pacific Gateway Office Director for the Maritime Administration at USDOT, and senior positions at the Port of Long Beach and City of Pasadena. He serves on the WTS-Los Angeles Board and advocates for diversity in the transportation field. Shen is nationally recognized for his expertise, with appointments to TRB's Intermodal Freight Committee (AT045) and prior leadership roles in TRB's Marine Group (AW000) and Ports and Channels Committee (AW010).

In academia, Professor Shen began teaching at USC in 2008 and has held positions at UCI and UCLA. Currently he teaches Sustainable Transportation (CEE430) and Transportation Studio (PPD531) while serving as the USC Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Faculty Advisor.

Professor Shen is a licensed Professional Engineer (Civil) in Alabama and California, a certified Transportation Professional Planner (PTP), and a Certified Port Executive (CPE). He earned his B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from UC Irvine. Professor Shen was inducted by UCI Samueli School of Engineering's Hall of Fame and named a Distinguished Engineering Alum for his professional accomplishments and commitment to mentoring. Additional honors include the Honorable Ray LaHood Award (WTS-LA), Outstanding Engineering Educator Award (Orange County Engineering Council), and Western ITE Outstanding Transportation Educator Award.
